The Secret To Controlling Your Emotions

Published February 4, 2023 by Sabah V.

Everyone is always looking for a cure. How to cure depression, how to no longer have anxiety, how to get rid of their anger, so on and so forth. What we fail to realize sometimes is that these are normal human emotions: sadness, worry, and anger.

Why We Have Emotions

As a human being, you have accessibility to a wide-range of motions. Happiness, sadness, anger, worry, fear, excitement, confusion, sexual desire, the list goes on and on. Your emotions serve two very important purposes:

        1) They help you communicate with others

        2) They help you react quickly in important solutions

Accepting Your Emotions

As stated previously, a lot of nowadays society is focused on the bad sides of these emotions. The rise of acceptance around anxiety and depression has made us believe that these are inherently bad emotions to feel. But, we fail to realize that these are part of the spectrum of emotions that every human being faces. If you are in a stressful situation – you will feel anxious. If you are upset about something – you are going to feel depressed.

Obviously there is a clear distinction between feeling the emotion and having an unhealthy amount of an emotion. But, instead of trying to get rid of the emotion – it would be more useful to figure out how to control the emotion.

Using It As Fuel

Imagine this: You are the valedictorian for your grade and you have to give a big speech at graduation. You are nervous about the possibility of messing up, forgetting your lines, embarrassing yourself in front of your peers, etc. I’m sure many of you have given a speech before – so you know how stressful and anxiety-inducing it can be. Someone in this situation could end up wishing they didn’t have anxiety leading up to their speech.

But, the truth is – everyone has anxiety leading up to these sorts of situations. Look at people who give speeches often in front of large crowds of people. If you watch their interviews – they usually admit to how they are in fact nervous before every speech, but they know how to harness that power to make them perform well under pressure.

That’s the key. Everyone feels anxious before a speech – but you can use this as a source of power.

Instead of thinking “How can I get rid of this?”, instead wonder: “How can I use this to my benefit”
