Lessons on Compassion & Love From Taoism

Published July 20th, 2023 by Sabah V.

Taoism is a set of Chinese traditions and religions which emphasize living in harmony with the Tao with various beliefs of Love, Patience, and Modesty.

Golden Rule

The golden rule has been taught to many at a young age, I remember the first time I heard about it was in Kindergarten.

The golden rule is simply: Treat others how you would want to be treated.

Taoism holds the idea that we are all fundamentally connected. So we should aid those who are merely extended expressions of our own nature.

Be Kind To Yourself

While it is important to treat others with respect, it is also important to treat yourself the same way.

Often times in life we are very hard on ourselves, and we say things to ourselves that we would never dare to say to other people.

Be kind to yourself. Real magic comes when you treat yourself with love and respect.

Be True To Yourself

At the same time, be true to yourself. Be authentic. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and imperfect.

A lot of times as we get older, we tend to become a more normal version of ourselves out of fear of not fitting in. Being unique is what makes people remember you for being special.

Be true to yourself and who you are at your core. Look to yourself for that strength.

Let Go of Perfection

Work at being the best you can at whatever you do in life, but also embrace your faults and individual flaws. It is impossible to do everything in life perfectly, and thinking you can will lead to you becoming very stressed.

We tend to compare ourselves to others, especially over social media. It’s important to realize that social media shows the best moments of people, so what you see isn’t an accurate representation of their life. It is just the best moments of their life.

You don’t have to be perfect, being imperfect and vulnerable can be great strengths.
